Our Stories

The Original AnKing Team

Nick

Nick with his wife Meghan at the University of Utah. While serving in Taiwan for two years, I used the spaced repetition approach to learning Chinese. Later, as I prepared for medical school, I attempted to use Anki to study for the MCAT but gave up. I disliked the interface and did not understand how to use it. I was determined to figure this out for medical school. I ended up reading the entire Anki manual and helping students set up their Anki to succeed in medical school.

Forrest

Forrest with his wife Olivia at the University of Utah. As a pre-medical student I attempted to use Anki to prepare for the MCAT and completely misunderstood how it should be used so I gave up. As a current medical student, I have used it to successfully master our curriculum. My scores increased and the amount of time I studied decreased by 3-5 hours every weekday. I no longer had to study on weekends. Gone are the days of cramming and forgetting information! I am currently a University of Utah medical student planning to pursue residency in neurosurgery. I graduated in neuroscience from Brigham Young University in 2018. As a San Diego native, I love surfing, mountain biking, and fly fishing. An interesting fact is that I helped start a non-profit that began in Mozambique called HealthLink Cooperative!

Tyson

Tyson at the University of Utah. Like the others, I tried using Anki to study for the MCAT and ultimately stopped. I was using it incorrectly and it wasn't working for me. I used it to memorize information for my current medical school courses. I have a degree in neuroscience from BYU and am currently studying at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Following school I plan to pursue a career in electrophysiology. A fun fact about me is that I have traveled to 35 of the 50 US states and 15 countries. I love to travel!

Blake

Blake with his wife, Lisa, and their oldest daughter. Prior to medical school at the University of Utah, I graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Spanish. After medical school, my plan is to pursue general surgery with a focus on trauma and critical care. Beyond my education and career goals, I enjoy long-distance running, listening to music, and collecting pocket knives. However, the greatest joy in my life is being a father. I love my little girls, Jane and Hazel!

The Origin of Anki Palace

Andrew

I joined forces with AnKing after reaching out to Nick on Reddit about some ideas I had for programmatically identifying duplicates in the AnKing deck. Our collaboration led to the concept for Anki Palace. Andrew at the Center for Applied Microbiome Science. I am a research software engineer working on microbiome data science software for the Pathogen Microbiome Institute at Northern Arizona University in beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona 🧬. I previously provided technical support to Fluent Forever Anki users and have used Anki extensively to study pre-med, music, computer science, and Dutch. As a former AFS exchange student, I’ve spent nearly two years living abroad in the Netherlands . I’m interested in contemplative practices, effective altruism, and am currently developing a unique mnemonic system. Working with the AnKing team has inspired me to consider going back to school to pursue an education in traditional osteopathy. 🥼
